Are no-KYC crypto exchanges safe? 10 red flags to check

By the Ghostex team

Updated

No-KYC removes the identity step, not the risk. Here is what it protects you from, what it does not, and ten checks to run before you move a single coin through any swap service.

  • Safety
  • No KYC

A no-KYC exchange can be safe to use, but it depends on three things. Who holds your coins, and for how long? What do the written rules say happens when something goes wrong? And are those rules published before you send anything? Skipping the ID check does not skip blockchain analysis, holds on flagged funds or the cost of a network mistake.

What does no-KYC protect you from, and what not?

The gain is real but narrow. A service that never collects your passport or selfie cannot lose them, and with no account there is no password to phish and no balance sitting in your name. For what no-KYC means in practice, from the order form to the payout, see our explainer. Four risks remain:

  • Public chains stay public. A Bitcoin, Ethereum or Tron deposit is visible to anyone, and the service sees the address you paid from and the payout address you gave it.
  • Holds on flagged funds. Services screen deposits with blockchain analysis and publish the right to pause what their tools flag. What happens next, and whether it involves documents, is set by each service's written rules.
  • Your own mistakes. A wrong network, a missing memo or a mistyped address is not undone by skipping KYC.
  • Lookalike sites. A copied site on a similar domain can show a real service's design with its own deposit addresses. Type the domain yourself or use a bookmark.

The second point is where services differ most, so here is what five of them publish about flagged funds.

Published rules on flagged funds, checked 26 September 2026
ServiceWhat its published rule saysSource
FixedFloatAn order funded with money "clearly related to criminal activity" may be suspended until the origin of the funds is explained. As an exception, identity verification may be requested; refunds then follow verification and go only to the address the funds came from.Terms of service, s. 7.1 and 7.9
ChangeNOWAutomated tools can place an unusual transaction on hold and ask for clarification or documents. Verification runs through Sumsub, and the verification link stays active for 3 days. Users from certain jurisdictions must complete KYC before using the service.AML/KYC policy, s. 2 to 4
SimpleSwapThe "no KYC" approach applies only to transactions identified as low risk, and SimpleSwap may at its discretion require KYC checks on any transaction.AML/KYC policy, s. 4.1 and 4.2
SideShift.aiFlagged deposits are reviewed. Users with flagged deposits "of serious nature" must complete verification before their refund is processed.Risk management policy
GhostexAutomated analysis of public blockchain data may be used; an order connected with a prohibited use may be delayed, declined or refunded. Ghostex never asks for identity documents, a seed phrase or private keys.Terms, s. 6

The pattern is consistent: no-KYC means no identity step by default, not immunity from review. The differences sit in the details: whether a refund needs documents, where it goes and how long a review can take. That is why the rules are worth reading before the first order. Our table of no-KYC swap services compared lines up more of these terms side by side.

Is a swap service safer than an exchange account?

It changes how much is exposed and for how long. An exchange account holds a balance for as long as you leave it there, so a frozen account freezes the whole balance. A swap service holds your coins only while an order runs, from the moment the deposit arrives until the payout or refund goes out. The Ghostex Terms put it plainly: Ghostex is not a wallet, and deposited funds are held only as long as it takes to complete or refund your order.

So the exposure is the amount in flight, for the length of one order, typically 5 to 30 minutes depending on network confirmations. The other side of that coin: once a payout is broadcast, it cannot be recalled, so the address you paste is final.

What are the 10 red flags to check?

Run these checks on any swap service, including this one. Each takes a minute with the site's FAQ and terms open.

10 red flags on a no-KYC swap service
Red flagWhy it mattersHow to check
1. No published feeA cost hidden in the rate cannot be compared, and you learn it only after the swap.Find a percentage or pricing rule in the FAQ or terms, then compare a quote with the market price.
2. No published limitsAn amount outside unstated limits can be held or returned minus costs.Look for a minimum and maximum per order, in coin units or US dollars.
3. No written refund ruleYou cannot tell whether a failed order comes back, to which address or at what cost.Search the terms for "refund": what triggers one, where it goes, what is deducted.
4. No order tracking without an accountYou cannot follow a deposit through its confirmations to the payout.Check for an order ID and a status page that opens without logging in.
5. No support contactWhen a deposit stalls, there is nobody to write to.Find a support email or form, and send a question before your first order.
6. No stated rate-lock timeA "fixed" rate with no duration can be repriced after you pay.The terms should say how many minutes a fixed rate holds.
7. Promises of anonymity or risk-free resultsNo service can make a public chain private or promise that nothing fails; absolute claims put marketing ahead of rules.Compare the homepage claims with what the terms actually commit to.
8. Asks for a seed phrase or private keyWhoever holds them can move every coin in your wallet, and a swap never needs them.Treat any such request, from a site, a support agent or a chat, as a reason to stop.
9. Fixed quote without a stated windowIf the deadline for sending the deposit is unstated, you cannot tell whether a late or different amount gets the quoted rate.Look for the sending deadline and the rule for late or wrong-amount deposits.
10. Brand-new service with no track recordThere is no payout history, and no independent reviews to weigh.Search for independent reviews and start with the minimum amount.

How Ghostex scores on the same list

Applying the checklist to ourselves, with the source for each answer:

  • Flags 1 and 2: a flat 0.48% fee already included in the quote, and limits of about $10 to $10,000,000 per order. The form shows the exact limits in coin units (Ghostex FAQ).
  • Flag 3: refunds are automatic and written into the Terms (section 12).
  • Flags 4 and 5: an order ID opens the order status page without an account, and support is one email inbox.
  • Flags 6 and 9: a fixed rate is locked for 30 minutes from order creation. The deposit must be sent within that window and match the order amount; otherwise it is executed at the market rate or refunded (Terms, section 8).
  • Flags 7 and 8: no anonymity promise, and no request for a seed phrase, private keys or identity documents.
  • Flag 10 applies in full. Ghostex is a new service with no track record and no third-party reviews yet; its operator, Ghostex.ai in Kutaisi, Georgia, is named in the Terms. Weigh that, and start with a small order.

How do you test a service with a small amount?

A test order proves the route you will actually use, at a cost you can ignore. On Ghostex the minimum is about $10, so a test costs the 0.48% fee, under 5 cents, plus your wallet's network fee for the deposit. Minimums vary: Godex's terms advise against orders of $30 or less, as our Godex alternative page notes. Ghostex is not affiliated with Godex.

  1. Read the fee, limits, refund rule and rate lock in the terms before you start.
  2. Use the same wallet, coin and network you plan to use for the real amount. A test on another route proves nothing about yours.
  3. Expect the deposit wait of that coin: 20 Tron confirmations take about 1 minute, while 2 Bitcoin confirmations on a route such as BTC to XMR take about 20 minutes.
  4. Save the order ID, follow the status page, and check the deposit and payout transactions on a block explorer.
  5. Compare what arrived with the quote. If it matches, scale up; if anything is unclear, ask support before a larger order.

It depends on where you live. Rules on crypto and on identity checks differ by country, and a service that asks for no documents cannot check them for you. The Ghostex Terms (section 5) make you responsible for knowing and following the laws that apply to you. Section 6 lists prohibited uses such as money laundering and sanctions evasion. An order connected with a prohibited use may be delayed, declined or refunded, and a broadcast payout cannot be reversed (section 11). This is not legal advice.

What do automatic refunds cover, and what do they not?

Under the Ghostex Terms (section 12), a deposit is returned automatically in four cases:

  • it is below the minimum or above the maximum;
  • it arrives after the order expired, or after the fixed-rate window, and is not executed at the market rate;
  • the pair or a network becomes unavailable before execution;
  • the order is declined under the prohibited-use rules.

The refund goes out in the same asset and on the same network, to your refund address or to the address you paid from. It is the amount received minus the network cost of sending it back; no fee is kept on a refunded order. The details are in our guide to automatic refund rules.

Some mistakes fall outside that net. A deposit of the wrong asset, on the wrong network or without a required memo or tag is not refunded automatically, and recovering it may not be possible. Read up on wrong-network mistakes before your first stablecoin swap. And if you pay from an exchange account, a refund to the address you paid from lands with that exchange. The exchange decides how to credit it, so give a refund address of your own.

Ghostex publishes its fee, limits, rate lock and refund rules, and it is also new: check both before you trust it with more than a test order. This guide is general information, not financial or legal advice. Product facts follow the Terms and the Privacy policy.

FAQ

No-KYC exchange safety: questions

Can a no-KYC exchange freeze my funds?

Most publish the right to pause flagged deposits for review, and some require verification before a refund. On Ghostex, an order connected with a prohibited use may be delayed, declined or refunded, and it never turns into a request for identity documents.

Will Ghostex ever ask for my ID?

No. Ghostex never asks for identity documents, a seed phrase or private keys. If a message asks you for any of them, it is not from Ghostex.

Is it safe to swap a large amount without KYC?

Read the rules on flagged funds and refunds first, then run a small test on the exact route you plan to use. A swap service holds your coins only while the order runs; Ghostex accepts up to about $10,000,000 per order.

Does no-KYC mean my swap is private?

Not fully. No identity is collected, but a deposit on Bitcoin, Ethereum or Tron is public on its chain, and the service sees the addresses involved. Keep your order ID to yourself, because it opens the order's status page.

Why does this guide say Ghostex has no track record?

Because it is a new service: there are no third-party reviews and no track record yet, although the operator (Ghostex.ai, Kutaisi, Georgia) is named in the Terms. Its published rules are checkable today; its history is not, so start with a small order.
